May 10 - July 9, 2008 Steve Gibson's Prints and Drawings Reception: Saturday, June 14, 2008, 6 - 9pm Four Walls will feature an intriguing array of recent monoprints and mixed-media drawings by internationally exhibited local artist Steve Gibson. This representative sampling of Gibson's current graphic explorations reveals how the artist's deft juxtaposition of iconographic and abstract imagery, rendered in drawing, collage, and print technology yield elegant and enigmatic non-linear visual narratives. By keying into catalog-like indexical qualities of historical and contemporary illustrations and symbols, Gibson poses structural questions through his placement of simultaneous ambiguities of form and content within the frame. Fragmentation, irony, and appropriation intermingle with poetic resonance in Gibson's work. The relational and puzzling aspects of his images are created through a play between the artist's vocabulary of ciphers and glyphs, positing for the viewer different levels of meaning as an intimate and personalized reading of cues. Steve Gibson received an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, an MA and BA from San Diego State University. He has exhibited at the Oceanside Museum of Art, The La Jolla Athenaeum Music and Arts Gallery, and The Earl and Birdie Taylor Library in San Diego, as well as in museums and galleries in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, England, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and China. Hours: Thursdays - Saturdays, 11am - 6pm, and by appointment 619.501.0879 / info@4wallsgallery.com |
